Tim Lobb visited LOBB + PARTNERS new 18 hole project that is being built in the popular coastal town of Bodrum in Turkey. The project is being developed by Carya Golf Owner, Mr Fikret Ozturk of Regnum Hotels.

Set just inland and in the mountains the terrain for this par 71, 6800 yard course is strongly contoured with rocky outcrops.

The course has been in construction for over a year and has presented some interesting challenges. Because of the rocky nature of the ground we are designing the bunkering strategy in the field via sketch ideas and philosophies. Careful attention is paid to ground conditions whilst at the same time ensuring maximum player enjoyment. We are not solely relying on bunkering as the only hazard of the golf course and in the end the course will be very lightly bunkered, say 20-30 in total. Contoured run offs, small undulations and trees will form the back bone of the playing strategy.

An olive grove previously occupied the land and part  of the design philosophy was to retain as much of the olive grove as possible. In fact many holes will have a working olive grove right next to them. The olives and their oil will continue to be manufactured and soon enough served in the clubhouse and throughout the local community.

Holes 13-18 were sprigged last year and the remaining holes will be finalised and grassed by the summer with a planned opening event of October 2017.

LOBB + PARTNERS look forward to keeping our readers updated on this exciting project that we are building with Golf Teck (Tim Lobbs’ fourth course construction with the company).
